Empathy about the plight of others and their feelings is an important trait to instil in children from an early age. Without getting too dramatic, a few clean toys in working order is a fantastic way to get kids thinking about the world around them and being generous with things that are lying around.
Have the Talk
Before launching into packing the goods in a box and handing them to the kids remember to think about their feelings and how attached they may be to a toy at any given stage of their life. If they are old enough to reason with and understand that they are too old for something, then you have a good chance of getting them to donate it. Five and older is a good age.
