The rise of Playmobil is one that was rather unexpected, and unplanned. Their creator, Hans Beck, actually had a passion for building model planes ñ but was commissioned by the Brandst ‰tter Group in Germany to create small figurines. Inspired by the drawings of children, these figures were an instant success in the eyes and hands of their young audience. First produced in 1974 the big headed, smiling toys were selling world wide less than a year later. Targeted at children age six to twelve, Playmobil sets now come in every style imaginable, from construction workers to pirates, and continues to challenge the competition in new and exciting ways each day.
